Sob storys

I try not to self pity these days, but sometimes things get really rough.

I mean, back in 1993, I went trough a demented craze stareing at the
professional drum kit, and it is ironic, because, for some reason, in a live
band, and believe me, I simply LOVE live bands, and LOVE live music, as a
whole different avenue of entertainment,- I always look at the drummer.

FOr some reason....

I got to thinking one day, and recalling early childhood memorys about trips
to antique shops, second hand shops, metal-workers, and the junkyard, in
Paraparaumu, and I woundered:

WHY HASN'T ANYBODY BOTHERED TO MAKE A DRUMKIT OUT OF DURABLE, AND SONICALLY
INTERESTING SCRAP/JUNK?????

Sure, I realize that only one in 10000 peices of scrap would fit well
togther in sonic combination, and sound interesting, and be hardy enough for
use, and constant playing, but I started ritualistically, and
obsessive-compulsively hording, and seeking junk, and by the end of a siz
month period I had found:

i)A watercooler,
ii)A silver oven plate which had once been used for scones, {SOUNDED AMAZING},
iii)Pipes,
iv)Chimes,
v)Pots, pans, spoons....

I also spent many hours sketching, and looking around places, and I then
came upon three ideas that I will mention here:

THE TRI-HAT: This is, actually, the main thing that is, at present bugging
me......

You see, back in 1993, I thought of a three leveled hi-hat, which operated
via the use of three pedals, these used for pushing all combinations of the
hats, large, medium and small from bottom to top.

The left pedal did the bottom two, the right pedal the top two, and the
central pedal all three.

The heel ball of the foot was placed on a rotateable, gnarled, plate, - a
plate with a ridge.

I told many people about this, and went to music shops, emailed people, and
sweated bllod to get people interested in this, all to no avail.

Then, what should I seen in a March 2000 copy of MODERN DRUMMER???

Yes, that's right, they had called this new and exciteing peice of equipment
the same name, and it had a design almost identical to mine.

It isn't really the fact that I didn't get rich out of this devise, and it
isn't really the fact that I didn't get famous.

What really annoys me, is the fact that no matter how many people, and/or
who I tell:

NO ONE BELIEVES ME.

However sad this sob story is, and however pissed I am at it, I do have more
ideas.

What I will do, is patent both of them, as I feel that they have commercial
possibilitys, for sure.

Please, email me if you wish to hear more.

Cevin Key of Download/Skinny Puppy did this

Einstürzende Neubauten did this

SlipKnot appears to do this

Throbbing Gristle did this

even Tom Waits does this.

I even did it 6 years ago in a Industrial/spoken word band. we called the
device the Noise Unit, it was make of cow bones and rail road scrap metal.
It even had moose horns. unfortunately we had no idea about how to make
percussive instruments at the time, so it did not sound very good.

there are many many composers and groups who have delved into this type of
percussion - most are in the industrial genre, but I have heard many genre's
using junk percussion - from pop to house.

there is also a trend of people using scrap percussion instruments as
MIDI/Gate triggers.
