Rubbing alcohol takes it off quickly and easily, and won't harm most finishes. It's gotta be
easier than cutting strips of paper. Works great on my DX7, and on the Yamaha controller I use
at work.

3M makes a white labeling tape that won't leave goo but it also tends to peel off after a few
hours. Maybe that with a piece of Scotch tape on each end would suit those who are finicky about
the cleanliness of their instruments.
