RE: [tuning] The 34-tone equal temperament scale

Larry Hanson wrote some material on 34-tET, and it's been mentioned by many
others. The main problem is that the set of "12 tones of the just-intonation
chromatic scale" is largely irrelevant to musical practice, and 34-tET falls
apart as a diatonic tuning due to its non-vanishing comma (in fact, the
comma is expanded to 35¢). However, if one wants to play around on the
5-limit JI lattice without regard to diatonic-based progressions or melodic
considerations, then 34-tET is the smallest set of pitches that gives you
access to the whole infinitude of the lattice with 5-limit harmonic errors
all under 4 cents (31-tET makes 6 cent errors, and the smallest to improve
upon 34 is 53-tET, with 1.4 cent errors).

Paul!
it also is used to approximate phi! Neil Haverstick has done some fine recordings using it
if you want to hear some of its sounds!

With an error of 14 cents -- not too good compared with its <4 cent errors
for 5-(odd)-limit intervals.

Yes, I have "African Stick" and like the 34-tET pieces.
