Christmas variations 2012

Hi tuners.

I haven't been following most of the discussion for a few months now (still learning lots of new things both at school and out of school) but anyway I wish you all the best during the Christmas season and a happy and pleasant year of 2013.

Here's the link to my new variations (a bit shorter this time) and, similarly to last year, there are two carols quoted (many times in their original forms, once in the inverted forms). The second one is usually harmonized in an ordinary Ionian major but I've decided to do it completely in Lydian because I just like it more that way.

Okay. See you next year.

P.S.: About half-an-hour ago, I've replaced one of the two recorder "ensembles" with more flute-like sounds, I've turned its individual volume down a bit, and I've doubled the bass line in unison at the point where the main theme is played in the lowest voices.
If you're still interested in the older rendition, I've renamed it to varia04a.mp3. Varia04 is now the newer one.

I listened to this again and I *really* like it.

Hi Carl,

it's the Yamaha QS-300. I keep using it because it's fully XG-compatible, including the XG tuning messages. I used the samples in a totally different way than they are expected to be used -- i.e. to immitate the reeds of old organs, I've sped up the saxophone sound, to immitate some old bowed instruments, I've sped up the double bass sound.

BTW: Except from the variations of 2009, all the others are tuned (in theory) to 50-equal (of course, one never knows how much the samples deviate from the proper pitches).

Thanks. Do you have all the Christmas Variations posted
somewhere? If not, I hope Chris V. will agree to host... -Carl

They can deviate, of course, but I wouldn't say "one never knows" - one can always listen to beats or use strobe tuner software.

Hi Carl,

if you change the 04 to 01 or 02 or 03 and leave the rest of the link the same, you should get the other ones.
So far I haven't had any need to massively reorganize the data pertaining to my account on the server and I hope I won't need to do so for a long-long time. Should something like that happen, I would definitely let you know before doing so.

I love it Petr! Thank you so much for sharing it - I especially like the
Renaissance timbre choices.

I've tried downloading the other ones about 2 minutes ago and it worked (to be precise, I used the "Save target as..." option).

I can try reuploading them if I'm asked to; but I'm not sure if that helps.

For the first time in the history of my music of this sort, I've made another rendition completely in Pythagorean; just to demonstrate the effect of some "slight" pitch changes in the individual voices. For me personally, it's like a clear defence for explaining why meantone is more appropriate in this case. Anyway, if you're interested, here it is:
