I agree with you Keenan here.
One has only to compare the vocal transcriptions of Harry Partch to those of Steve Reichs and that will dispel any idea that the diatonic has much to do with speech.
It was the complete lack of the even the chromatic scale that forced Partch to work with different tunings in the first place. forget what that Talking Heads guy say which I guess might the source.

Thank you!~ i will hunt the paper down when i am at uni next. We find tonal languages around the globe which vary in relationship to each other, but always a fascinating subject. There are Ballophones in Central Africa that differ in pitch from the octaves above. This is done as they speak about different subjects in different ranges so likewise do the same in their musical scale. An area of needed research.
