Variable Medieval thirds(!!)

I'm assuming I am the only person on this list not to read the
thoroughly comprehensive study of Pythagorean tuning by Ms. Margo
Schulter at:

http://www.medieval.org/emfaq/harmony/pyth.html

She has posted bits and pieces of these articles but NOTHING like what
is on this website...

So far, the most incredible aspect of these articles for me, is a
discussion of the "unstable" major and minor thirds of Pythagorean
tuning resulting from the syntonic comma...

Apparently composers at that time EXPLOITED the comma... using it as an
integral part of composition. Only LATER was it considered a "bug,"
i.e. something to be "ironed out."

I'm not exactly certain how any of this can be explicitly deducted from
the music of the period or from the treatises... what there are of them,
but, I assume it can...

Oh, and, of course, I remember the schisma.... just got a little
confused...
