The American Festival of Microtonal Music in NYC produced the Terpstra keyboard with Dylan Horvath in Toronto after the design of Siemen Terpstra in Amsterdam was chosen for the project, based on even earlier ideas. We use the instrument periodically for concerts. Joel Mandelbaum, author of America's first microtonal dissertation (1960, Indiana University, Multiple Divisions of the Octave), and an AFMM Board Member, provided most of the funding (through the Maldeb Foundation), and the initial costs were formidable. The second instrument was funded by the Canadian Government.

Of course,10 or 20 prospective purchases of the synthesizer model would make it allowable for building more of them.

I plan a new Terpstra recording by Rami Seo - NEXUS - on the AFMM web site soon: www.afmm.org

all best in microtonality,

Johnny Reinhard

The geometry of the Terpstra keyboard layout is characterized by a vertical shift in position between the top surface of a key and the six keys adjacent to it. This results in an intuitive feel for changes in pitch as your fingers move across the keyboard.
