Music schools for microtonalists?

Hey everyone,
I am presently considering what schools to apply for, probably for the
spring of next year. I have an associates degree in music and wish to
focus on composition and voice, although I also have interests in
early music and ethnomusicology, and have generally eclectic
interests. While I have no qualms with working in 12EDO building up a
base of compositional skills, much of my own personal writing has been
microtonal, mostly extended JI, and am wondering what schools would
have faculty knowledgeable about tuning/microtonality and who would be
sympathetic to my longterm musical intentions and who could provide
some guidance.

I know Kyle Gann is faculty at Bard College in New York State which is
by what I understand a good music school in the general sense. I also
know that Bill Alves is faculty at CSU San Diego, but my impression is
that it is not a very impressive school for music. Where else should I
look into? I'm open to any area, including possibly internationally,
but am living in/a resident of California so any schools within the
state merit additional attention.

Thanks for any help,
Cody Hallenbeck

Cody,

Though different than your question I recommend the Xenharmonic Praxis summer camp in west virginia as a primer.

Google xenharmonic praxis 2012 to find the oddmusic website announcement.

I went last year and it was a great 2 week immersion of all things mivrotonal.

Great recommendation, Steve. I'll look into Brunel. I read Gilmore's Partch
biography, thought it was very good. The school looks promising and
studying in the UK sounds interesting. I really like a lot of UK choral
ensembles and general take on performing early music as well.

Chris, I really would love to do the Xenharmonic Praxis but I have
commitments for the summer.

Bob is right in the middle of all kinds of microtonal practice over here, as academic, professor, performer, writer, curator.....
There is a bit of a 19ET movement here too at the moment.

The New England Conservatory in Boston, connected with the Boston Microtonal Society. Julia Werntz ( http://necmusic.edu/faculty/julia-werntz?lid=2&sid=3 ) is there.

The California Institute of the Arts, where James Tenney used to teach. (Dunno who is there now.)

But generally, I got the impression microtones are a part of the education at quite a lot of places nowadays.

Not to forget, if schoola outside of the anglo-saxon area are an option, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, connected with the Ekmelic Music Society ( http://www.ekmelic-music.org/en/index.htm )

Flutist Jon Fonville and cellist Charles Curtis are both at U. of Cal. San Diego and seem to be knowledgeable about extended just intonation. I don't know a whole lot about them beyond that, though.
