How about an ordinary newsgroup, like alt.music.microtonal? Then all
these things would be supported. If you've not used newsgroups before,
check out usenet.com for the lowdown on how this works. Check out
alt.bin.<your group here> for images, MIDI and audio (watch out-there are
some gross alt.bin sites).

Well, when David Mandole pointed out that the Mills tuning list was going
away, I asked people if they were interested in a newsgroup, and nobody seemed
to like the idea. Anybody have any comments on the topic in this respect?

It would make it easier for people to find and to visit.

The more casual visitors we reach, the more opportunity we have to promote
microtonality to the general public.

(To protect my privacy, I always use pseudonyms on Usenet. I'd advise others
to consider doing likewise.)

I presonally think that a newsgroup would be a great approach. Let's hear some
counterarguments.

Gary
I think you are starting to be outnumbered. Why not at least explore the website idea.

Which web site idea in particular? A contribution sort of thing?

That could entail a lot of work for whoever accepts things to be posted and "ftp"s them to
the website. But considering how little interest generating messages with sound and graphics
to illustrate new-tuning ideas seems to have generated, perhaps it wouldn't be all that
difficult.

Here's the official description of newjustintonation@onelist.com (per
<http://www.onelist.com/group/newjustintonation>):

- newjustintonation - Founded December 30, 1999 - Members: 25

This community joinly explores different JI (just intonation) tunings
that go beyond 12 pitches and or 7 limits or limits in general. We
also welcome explorations into other tunings that fall outside of
equal divisions. As historical tunings are of some interest the
accent is on new possiblities

If you need a broader scope, you might try its "brother" list,
tuning@onelist.com (more info at <http://nowitzky.hypermart.net/tuning>):

- tuning - Founded December 28, 1998 - Members: 347

Welcome to the Alternate Tunings Mailing List.
(Originally based at Mills College in Oakland, California, USA.)

This mailing list is intended for exchanging ideas relevant to
alternate tunings: just intonation; paratactical tunings;
experimental musical instrument design; non-standard equal
temperaments; MIDI tuning system exclusive specs; concert postings;
gamelan tunings and other non-western tunings; historical tunings;
the experimental tunings of Harry Partch, Lou Harrison, Martin
Bartlett, James Tenney, and so on; software reports; recordings;
books; research sources, etcetera.

Happy retuning!
