Looking for a scale

Hello all,

I'm looking for a diatonic scale, something subtly Arabic or with a mood to that effect.

Must contain a minor second, perfect fourth and perfect fifth.

It's for a short film and it would be great to get some microtones in there.

Thanks,

Sean

A few things come to mind:

1) Porcupine[8] in 15-equal.
2) Porcupine[7] in 15 or 22-equal, but with the second altered to be
minor as you requested.
3) Mohajira[7], but with the second altered to be minor as you requested.

None of those will let you down, I'm sure of it.

Oh, really? He hasn't said how closely in tune it's going to need to be. He wants fourths and fifths, but he didn't say the 15et versions would be good enough.

If you want better intonation for the first one, put it in 22-equal,
but alter one of the notes by 1\22 so that you end up with a minor
second. Of course, this is cheating, and will lead to vile, impure,
sinful music, so don't do it.

Try Negri[10], perhaps in 19-EDO: 2 2 2 2 1 2 2 2 2 2. I think you will find it is indeed subtly arabic, but also with a good complement of consonant chords and some xenharmonic intervals (subminor 3rd, supermajor 6th, and a quartertone-ish interval. It's got more minor 2nds than you could shake a stick at, plenty of perfect 4ths and 5ths, but with some subtly unusual shadings.

Thanks for the ideas all. I'm checking these out now.

No need to worry how in tune they are. This track is just bass and drums and there's no harmony.

That being said I will be tuning my fourth and fifth as 4/3 and 3/2 regardless of what temperament I use. That's in case I want to play a dyad on the bass.

Cheers again!
