passing through-formula for finding the MOS of a particular generator

Many of Ervs papers includes an actual formula which is quite simple. if you look at page 3 of

one starts with the log base 2 of the generators size in its relation to the period (octave or not) and one figures out the anti log or on my calculator the X-1
this gives us 2.291......
now we move two places to the left of the scale tree and subtract the 2 from the equation and repeat the process. (.291)-1 etc. This will create the zig zag pattern with the upper number being the generator and the lower the number of tones.
at the point where we stop we see that one has to move 14 places to the left , which lets us know that the 24/55 MOS is real close
