fretless microtonal basses

Ed and all-
I have always preferred fretless basses with position lines,
essentially white plastic inlays where fret slots would be. In equal
tempered tunings these are critical (for me) for accurate pitch,
especially in fast passages.
Also, it seems that dulcimers could easily be fretted to be just. Does
anyone know how the frets are traditionally placed?

A good place to start would be John Starrett's microtonal summary page.
Unfortunately I don't know that URL off the top of my head. John?
