mic blues ensemble

Neiel Haversticks recent post about blues incited me to tell about an
idea that has been with me for some time: It seems to me that an ideal
way of "tuning up" music in such genres as country, blues, bluegras,
folk, etc. would be to form an ensemble that uses instruments which are
native to the genres AND are capable of variable intonation. One possible
grouping (subsets could be used as well) follows:

- Upright string bass (or fretless electric bass)
- Dobro or lap steel guitar (or pedal steel)
- Fretless banjo
- Harmonica (The Hohner catalog shows most models to be in Just Intonation)
- Human voice

Any other ideas?

Next Monday 25-3 is on Dutch Radio 4 from 20.02 - 24.00 the programme
Supplement from NPS/VPRO devoted to La Monte Young.
New York, August 1995, Co de Kloet and Michael Fahres are at the
doorstep of La Monte Young's house and have a 4 h. interview with him.
The programme has further old work and new recordings. His "Dream
House", a sound sculpture that was in the old stock exchange of New
York has been rebuilt inside his new house and is open for the public.

On the Dutch channel Concertzender, tomorrow Monday 9 September,

Cipriani and Eric Lyon: "1979" and "Tapeworm". Repetition of

This is Eric's statement about the works:

"Both pieces come from the same aesthetic which is
to "liberate" music from found sounds from any possible
source including commercially recorded music, originally
recorded sounds and sounds synthetically created on computer.
None of the music is created according to a specific
microtonal scale, although various equal tempered and
just scales are sometimes used as templates for filtering.
The processes I use guarantee that 12 TET rarely if ever
surfaces, but no tuning is systematically applied."

The second string quartet is microtonal. The microtones are used
in two different ways: 1. by equally dividing an interval, for instance
a minor third in four steps of 75 cents or a major second in three
steps of 67 cents. 2. raising or lowering a certain tone by 25/24
or twice that, 150 cents which is the Arabic 3/4 tone.
The quartet consists of 12 short parts with an own character.

1. Chris Chafe - Quadro, for pianotrio and tape
2. Allan Schindler - Tremor of night and day, for cello and tape
3. Jonathan Berger - Diptych, for string quartet, soprano and tape
4. Dexter Morrill - Quartet, for violin, cello and two loudspeakers

Schindler's "Tremor of night and day" is one of the most beautiful
microtonal works that I know.
The title and much of the general atmosphere and expression is
inspired by "The Outermost House" written by Henry Breston, diaries
with reflections and observations of sea- and landscapes.
It was composed in 1984 for and in cooperation with cellist Robert
Sylvester. The electronic part consists of synthetic
computer-generated sounds and transformed acoustical sounds like
whisper and noises of pots and kettles.

Allan Schindler teaches composition at the Eastman School of Music.
(Is this an American institute? Hey, then maybe another school less
that lacks Brian's good detwelvulating seal of approval...)
