>There was an article in the current issue of "Discover" magazine (April >or May 1997 issue) with a picture of the Neanderthal Flute....
>The picture clearly shows 16 finger holes which look roughly >equally spaced and similar in size.

If so then it is different than the one Fink writes about. The fragment
that he shows on his website has only two holes and two edges that may be
half holes where the bone was broken. This bone was unearthed by "Dr. Ivan
Turk, a paleontologist at the Slovenian Academy of Sciences in Ljubljana."
I haven't seen the Discover article.

The discover article may have been referring to a more recent discovery. What they show is not a fragment of a bone flute but rather a nearly complete curved mammouth tusk showing 16 fairly equally spaced holes of uniform size. It was big enough that they were referring to it as an "Um-pah-pah" tuba flute.
I have the magazine at home. I'll check the references tonight and see if it relates to a more recent archeological discovery than the fragmented bone flute.

>Who knows how sophisticated they were? Their brain >size averages out to be bigger than ours.

That is true, although only slightly larger. The areas of the brain
that we enlarged (the back of the head) are associated with instinctive
behavior, according to a coworker who minored in paleoanthropology.
