to anyone interested, there will be a short recital of some of my
compositions in the mills college concert hall (oakland, california) on
tuesday 29 april at 2.30pm.

this is not really a public event, so it's free to enthusiasts; it's
going to be held during alvin curran's class and will probably include
other performances followed by boring academic critiques, etc. a couple of
the pieces that i am presenting feature a piano tuned to a scale in
7-limit just intonation.

(you can phone or e-mail me for details/directions.)

But Andrew, the augmented sixth chord IS represented almost exactly by
4:5:6:7 in meantone tuning. Do you therefore think meantone is not a good
tuning for music with augmented sixth chords? Remember that it was the
tuning in place when they arose. (I think it's a great way to make such a
highly chromatic construct sound less jarring, although when I play around
in meantone, I often go to the augmented sixth and don't resolve -- it's a
nice bridge from 5-limit to 7-limit harmony.)

Well, it's true that it arose in the 16th century, though all the examples
I've seen from that time are in choral music.

Much later the ambiguity of the german augmented sixth was a favorite
device of the romantics to effect a modulation to a foreign key. For
example:

C: V7B: Gr+6 I64 V I

Such modulations are not very compatible with 1/4-comma meantone, as you're
soon in wolf territory. Mozart used such modulations, though usually
briefly. Composers like Chopin and Schubert are the ones really known for
them.
