Good for them. I can't stand seeing, smelling, watching, feeling, people
chewing gum.

Another question, for anybody: Someone, Is there a religion that bans
profiting off of another man's labor? Is there a religion that bans capitalism?

Ozan,

I really don't know, yet. It's the next item on my theological
agenda, so to speak. But I hope to have something to say about it
very soon. It seems very beautiful and deep from this somewhat
convenient distance.

I have a little (old? 1966) book at hand that I haven't really
looked at, because it's I think it's extremely compact, and seems to
require complete alert concentration to read.

It's called _Introduction to Liturgical Theology_, by Alexander
Schmemann.

Regards,

Pete

Yes, I knew that, which is why I said it was a "Shia thing".
Plus, the "they" of the original message referred to Muslims
in power in Tehran.

According to this page...

http://www.geocities.com/siliconvalley/lab/7378/religion.htm

...all three God-of-Abraham religions have forbidden chess
at various times. The reasons given seem to center around the
fact that it was once a common subject of gambling (still is
in places like Washington Square Park). I suppose it is
easier to determine if two individuals are playing chess
than if they are engaged in a wager.

In fact at least as disturbing as the banning of the
divine game of chess, is this:

"...when we do not know the reason behind the forbiddenness of
an act, we are bound to obey in absolute obedience. There is a
reason for it, but we do not know it and when we do not know it,
it does not mean that we should not abide by it."

Yes, yes, take our word for it. Don't think for yourself.

Balderdash. We muslims are encouraged to judge for ourselves whether or not an act is in agreement with Islamic morals and codes. I see nothing wrong with chess or backgammon, lest the pursuit of such become an obsession which prevents the remembrance of Allah. Even then, it would only be a moderate sin, not an outright crime, and there would be no justification for a ban, but a personal reprimand. The Shia have gone over the edge with their Fatwas and subsequent insubordination paranoia. It just shows their exaggerated insecurity concerning their faith in Allah.
