Tons of great stuff here ,including a harrowing interview with French
(yikes). Btw,his drumming on those early records like TMR and LMDoB is
one of my all-time favorite musical accomplishments .Listen to
Bellerin' Plain, unbelievable!

I couldn't get a listen. What did I do wrong? :-) Seriously...

Bird in God's Garden from the first French, Frith, Kaiser, Thompson
record is rather gorgeous. What did you find "harrowing" about the
French interview? I didn't linger on every word, but only 'cause I
didn't catch anything particularly snaggy, like, "wait a second! what's
he on about here?"

Hmmm, maybe you read this one?

http://www.shiningsilence.com/hpr/people/french5.php

If so, try this one!

http://vpinterviews.blogspot.com/2005/04/magic-band.html

Something I should mention is that I think John French in general is
a very good drummer, but I've heard 10 million very good drummers .
However, it's his playing on Trout Mask and Lick my Decals off Baby
that is "whhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" He really invented a
whole new way to play the kit . Beefheart's music in this period was
made up of little , speech like phrases that were joined without
regard for the usual conventions of meter, phase length, or key .
And French kind of let each limb adopt a different players part--any
one part being almost unplayable, or at least unmemorizable--and
rolled out a composite that was (and still is) totally unlike
anything I've ever heard any drummer do , even French himself ! It
was a sound that was made for that music , and what a sound it was .
BTW, you might get the feeling listening to Beefheart in this period
that these "songs" were like half-spastic rock improvisations or
something....well I have video of the band from this period and they
play these songs note-for-maniacal-note as they are on the records .

Yeah, now! That's pretty harrowing. But great to read. He comes
off much more articulate and clear, too!

I guess I have to get LMDOB, huh? YEAH! I've never heard it, as far
as I know. I've always loved Doc at The Radar Station...still do,
actually. Very concise, hilarious, and beautiful.

What's this about the "unrealeased" Bat Chain Puller? Do you know?
I have the released one, I'm pretty sure, but on an old cassette,
probably, that a friend made.

I've never doubted that that stuff was really precisely worked out.
I think (not speaking from very far inside, dig?) that all the
great "free" players work from a very specific vocabulary that starts
at a sometimes (?) defiantly (that word just popped into my head)
high level. But there are usually strong roots to be traced too,
like with Ornette and Bird, and 'Trane and John Gilmore, etc. (Just
to sort of scratch the surface, no?).

French is an OK drummer, but too, I think there's a definitely a
personality and commitment that can always transcend merely great
technical skills. Maybe not always, but often enough to make you
go, "Holy Cow!" Hee!

Thanks!

Pete

I have a copy, I guess it's a very official looking bootleg. I haven't
listened to it in years. I'll check it out and get back to you with an opinion.
I'm a big Beefheart fan, I've been listening to Clear Spot a lot lately.

Did you figure this out?

I assume it's a legit Virgin release. Vinyl, right?

But when I followed the stuff Dan Stearns put up there were several
mentions of the "unreleased version". Perhaps a previous master that
got remixed or chopped up? It may be only available as part of the
(newish) giant box set.

If I find out I'll confirm.

Thanks,

Pete

Have you compared it to the 'official'? If so, how is it, in your
estimation?

Wow. There are a few (!) in things in there to entertain.

Thanks, Dan!

But the mad drumming sort of makes the whole thing possible as a truly musical event, yeah? I think so. Especially that last thing, yo.
