...am currently tracking down Huebner's original work.
But it sounds like it's based on innovations per capita
per year, but this doesn't strike me as the right units
for our experience of technology. . .

My instincts told me the same thing. I don't really see per capita factors as
being important here.

An innovation is an innovation, used by everyone. One genius like Edison is
enough to create massive pushes forward.
