Hello all,

I finally went last night to the Casbah (a local club)
to see a band that Bill Wesley told me about long ago
(and i know their drummer too): Sleeping People.

These guys are amazing.

The article in San Diego "City Beat" newspaper announcing
last night's show (their CD release party) is here:
http://www.sdcitybeat.com/article.php?id=3463

My favorite line from that review: "The music is meticulous
and exacting, and has just as much to do with Mahler and Bach
as with Tool and Tortoise."

The write-up that goes with their CD is the one you'll
find most on a Google search:
http://www.temporaryresidence.com/descriptions/trr84.php

Another write-up about them is here:
http://upcoming.org/event/14789/

For a balanced perspective, here's a less-enthusastic review:
http://www.scaruffi.com/vol7/sleeping.html

mp3's of two of their pieces are here:
http://www.sleepingpeople.com/sound.htm

And here are streaming mp3's that feature a few more songs:
http://www.emusic.com/album/10828/10828161.html

A warning about listening to these mp3's: to really try
to get an idea of what they sound like live, crank up the
volume so that it's *REALLY* FUCKING LOUD! ... and use
speakers that can handle that volume.

The two mp3's on their website are almost "pop" compared
to how weird and complicated some of their other tunes are.

I dunno, the samples I tried of SP were leaps and bounds
beyond those I tried of LB.

Hmmm. Maybe I'll try to see them at their show in September, but the
two mp3s I heard were a little underwhelming, if complex. Odd that
sleep factors into it, but my favorite of the last couple of years of
complex and gutsy music has to be Sleepytime Gorilla Museum;
unfortunately, they seem to be in the middle of moving/revamping their
website. It did remind me of an interesting web-music-connections tool
- using S.G.M. as a search, here is what Music-Map looks like:

http://www.music-map.com/sleepytime+gorilla+museum.html

S.G.M. contains plenty of metric complexity, along with lots of volume
(seems to be important) and a really wide instrumental pallette. Add
to that a fondness for dressing weird and being on of the more
theatrical groups out there, I'd say worth a look/listen. I can't
*believe* I missed them when they played in San Diego earlier this
year (also at the Casbah).

They go in the CD player when I want a night of "difficult listening".

YMMV, as always.

Cheers,
Jon

S G M are really big up here in LA with almost a monthly show that ends up packed with a very broad audience

Hi DeMolay,

Well, i did say that Sleeping People's sample mp3's
on their website are kind of "pop" compared to other
pieces i heard Saturday ... but your right, from
the sample i heard
http://www.loadrecords.com/sound/lightningbolt_draculamountain.mp3
Lightning Bolt has much more of a punk edge.
