great Sibelius symphonies box set

Sibelius fans,

I whole-heartedly recommend Paavo Berglund's offering of the 7 symphonies of
Sibelius and some other major tone poems, etc. with the Helsinki and
Bournemouth orchestras. They are gorgeously recorded, and revelatory, such is
Berglund's transparency of direction. He also plumbs some new emotional
depths that I haven't heard others approach.

Included are the complete Symphonies (a few of which are the greatest
compositions in the Western Classical tradition), Kullervo, Oma Maa (My
Homeland), Tulen Synty (Origin of Fire), Oceanides, Tapiola (one of the
greatest pieces ever written), Finlandia, Pohjola's Daughter, Luonnatar,
Serenades 1&2, Karelia, Scenes Historiques, En Saga, King Christian II, The
Bard (another favorite of mine), Swan of Tuonela, Spring Song, Lemminkainen's
Return, Pelleas et Melisande, Valse Triste, Scene with cranes, Swanwhite.

My only disappointment is the ommision of 'Night Ride and Sunrise', which is
superior to most of the other tone poems except Tapiola, Oceanides, The Bard,
and Pohjola's Daughter.

Anyway, Sibelius is one of my top 5 favorite composers ever, I think....

Best,
Aaron.

how is his fourth as this is the one that really puts me over. And sadly to say von karajan beats out everyone else so far on this one.
But thanks as i have noticed the set, which is not badly priced.
There is a certain continuation of Debussy in Sibelius as in taking highly polished fragments creating world by implication

The 4th is right up there in this performance, but I agree that Karajan has a
special touch with Sibelius. As does Colin Davis. But I haven't heard a
better 6th than this performance...

The 4th symphony and Tapiola are perhaps his most radically modern works. For
pure joyous emotional impact, it's hard to top the 5th symphony finale.

Yes, I agree; I think both Debussy and Sibelius (Sibelius perhaps more so
because he didn't have many conscious imitators, except perhaps Bax in
England and some indirect influence on various Scandanavians) are worlds unto
themselves.

Should also mention that Jukka-Pekka Saraste with Finnish Radio Symphony is a
very nice series of interpretations of Sibelius.

So much of the work i hear is kinda redundant work, this piece , at least the movement i heard was someone hearing with their own ear, unlike anyone else.
