synchronicity

Love and Lust and Fairy Dust

Two summers ago I was at work one day when I saw a woman and was
immediately overcome with a very strong sensation that I knew her
from somewhere. I didn't--she was a Slovak who had only been in the
United States for a few weeks and I was an American who'd never been
to Europe. Well as it turned out it wasn't long before we got to know
each other and we've had a very intense relationship ever since.
During the course of this relationship we've had some very peculiar
experiences and almost nonstop episodes of synchronicity. One episode
in particular stands out.

My son Bryan loves baseball, and in the summers we always practice at
the local ball fields. One day this past spring, shortly after Lubka
had come back from Slovakia, she noticed that all our baseballs had
the letter "S" written on them--an "S" for "Stearns". A few days
later, maybe even the next day, Bryan and I were taking the bucket of
baseballs out of the trunk when I noticed that one of the balls
had "slovak" written on it in lowercase black marker. When we emptied
the bucket we found two or three more. These balls were not just our
old ones with the new word added to the existing "S". They were used,
browned baseballs that I'd never seen before, and I had no idea how
they had got into the bucket in the trunk of the car. Though it
seemed unlikely and out of character, I still thought that Lubka
must've done this as a surprise/joke--she didn't.

So what I believe we have here is a synchronicity so bizarre that it
defies almost all probability. One day, and not just any one day, but
one day after my Slovak girlfriend--whom I have an intense fairytale
type relationship with--asks me what is the "S" on our baseballs all
about, I must've picked some balls from the outfield grass that were
abandoned for me to find by somebody with the last name of "slovak"!

Obviously if one is so inclined it's easy enough to find coincidence
and mysterious overtones in the everyday, but our entire time
together has been accompanied by a steady parade of these sorts of
brazenly curious coincidences that stand out in terms of their sheer
absurdity.

Heya Dan- thanks for sharing. I was once in a relationship
like this, with lots of improbable stuff going on around it.

Also when I came to California, a series of improbable events
happened. One of them: tuner and list-member Mark Rankin
came to visit me, only to discover that he knew my friend
Stephen, who was one of two people I knew in California when
I came. Mark lives in remote Northern California, about five
hours from Stephen. But he's in the same region as one of
Stephen's friends (still about 15 miles away).

I can add to the synchronicity in that my Father, who was a psychic, mother was Slovak.

Hi Dan

Well if you want some more synchronicity, I had a dream
about Czechoslovakia too a couple of days ago for
reasons totally unconnected with you. To do with
a Czech academic I once met many years ago in connnection
with my logic work - I dreamt I was in a big hall in
Czechoslovakia talking to him about tilings because
though he has done no work on tilings that I know,
his name is similar to another mathematician
who did research on tilings, and it was triggered I think
just because I'd been e-mailing to our George Secor
about Sagittal notation (for programming it in FTS),
and he also has a similar name.
(Soccolar, Soccor, and Secor are the three names).

I once nearly went on a trip to Czechoslovakia
to talk about my logic research there
and meet the logicians there who were
working in a similar field, but though
it was all nearly arranged, at the last
minute it never quite happened.

Kind of quite strange, goodness knows
why I should dream about that, funny the
things the mind throws up.

Robert

remember the very first time i came to San Diego?

you were already here visiting area microtonalists, and we both
arranged a meeting at Dave Hill's house -- where you happened
to lock your keys inside your car ... and i had just begun
arranging to start my locksmith business here, and had my
tool-kit in the trunk, so i was able to open up your car for you.

coincidence?

Hiya monz!

I do remember that, and I still owe you for that one. It
was another one of the microtonalist/California coincidences.
I don't think I've locked myself out of my car since (it's
not like I do it every day).
