Just thought I'd mention that recently, after returning
home from Europe, I've been reading a history-of-western-
civilization textbook, and that in it are numerous accounts
just like this, about various religious wars such as the
Crusades, the war against the Huguenots, etc. It's only
within the last few centuries that societies have given
up atrocities like this. Think about America: our slave
industry only ended 139 years ago.

Simply wanted to add that to try to ensure a balanced
ethno-historical perspective.

Oops... my bad. That was the effective date of the orders
in Lincoln's _Emancipation Proclamation_. Slavery actually
ceased in 1865 with the passage of the 13th Amendment to the
Constitution, so it was actually almost 135 years ago.

Let's see, we firebombed Dresden in order to inflict psychological
stress on the Germans, nuked two Japanese cities, carpet bombed and
napalmed Viet Nam, buried Iraqi soldiers alive, and large portions of
the citizenry (and many politicians and policy makers) are ready to
nuke Kabul. Just when did we give up atrocities? Yes these are all in
times of war, and all is fair, etc. But what do you suppose we are
doing today that furure historians will look on as atrocious? I will
bet we come in for plenty of criticism. I don't think we have given up
anything of our nature, but rather we are so comfortable and
priviledged that we have not had to view our worst side recently.
Let's wait and see what we are willing to do to our fellow humans as
this war gets more desparate.

p.s. Johnny, you probably know that I am not a pacifist, just a
pessimist. I just think it takes a long time to breed out the
brutishness inherent in our nature.

As a species, we've been able to discuss our problems for
over 45,000 years. Today's morning news is enough to convince
me that not much brutishness has been breeded out yet.
Hopefully we'll keep working on it.
