Dare I hope?

Another observation, with hope that - if nothing else - people might
start thinking:

Wow, I'm not *that* hopeful! I'd just like people to at least pause
for a moment and reflect on things that they have just taken for
granted, or given a pass on, or given the benefit of the doubt on,
etc, etc. The general populace of the United States (and probably
many other places) has an extraordinarily short attention span, and I
only hope for enlightenment that lasts long enough to get rid of
Bush. I realize that is a very short-term goal (one that not everyone
around here agrees with), but I'll settle for accomplishing that and
then working on some kind of future that includes dialogue and
introspection.

I don't know what, if anything will work. I am growing increasingly
uneasy about even the near future, and I'm not talking broad issues,
I'm thinking about daily life.

Cheers,
Jon

I find myself very much in the same frame of mind.

Anything you'd care to talk about? This can't be a good
thing to feel.

Not a bad idea. I hardly watch any more
and if my memory's good (kind of a dicey concept)
you don't even own one.

Nor do I, though I do watch DVDs downloaded
(commercial-free) TV shows on my laptop from
time to time.

Didn't mean it to be generally dramatic, but certainly a reflection
of my feelings. Most of my life, the political events in the world
always seemed 'over there'; my closest connection to a generation
that would understand would be my parents, who lived through WWII.
And no matter how heinous the leader (esp our presidents), I figured
the line would always straighten back out again, and - within
parameters - we would remain a country that at least tried to do the
right thing, and was moderately respected. And most of this was after
watching (and almost having to participate in - or get outta town!)
the Viet Nam debacle.

Now I'm not so sure. Now I think that the Bush administration has
thoroughly trashed any good will towards America or Americans; when I
was travelling alone in Europe and the Middle East in the early 80's,
there was *still* a little resentment post-Viet Nam, but orders of
magnitude less than currently (note Bush's reception in Ireland). And
more to the point is that the hostilities stirred up may very well
mean that our personal safety is no longer a given. I don't mean this
in a very selfish way, though I certainly want my family and friends
to always feel safe; rather, I believe that safety in general,
throughout the world, has been imperiled, and many innocent people
may be in harm's way because of the lunacy of Bush and his handlers,
as reflected in the actions of those who would act out against them
and their policies. In this respect, it will be the people, and not
the politicians, that may pay the ultimate price for their hubris.

Regards,
Jon
