Well, on the up-side, I'm here in Cincinnati, OH, a supposedly
conservative stronghold. Before the war started I saw lots of "peace is
patriotic" signs up on people's lawns, etc. (There are a lot of flags
too).

Actually, I like Cincinnati politically, as a place to live. Apropos of
Kyle Gann's e-mail, I'm in one of those swing states, and so every letter
or FAX I send, I feel like I'm . . if not accomplishing something. . .at
least throwing dirt into the gears of the beast.

So it's kind of cool in a way . . despite the fact that nearby Indian
Hill, a suburb of Cincy, is the 2nd-largest Bush contributor county in the
USA (second to . . . ironically. . .New York City (!?!?) .
As Kramer said on Seinfeld: "Because if you don't want to be part
of society, Jerry, then pick up your things and move over to the EAST
SIDE. . . . " )

yeah, actually, if by "largest" you mean "most money",
i'm not very surprised that New York comes in at number 1.
i'm pretty sure there are still more millionaires
(and these days, billionaires) per square mile in
Manhattan than anywhere else in the USA.

Not to mention the largest concentration of Jews in the US if not
the world, many of whom are happy about Bush's pro-Israel stance.

Not a racist comment BTW (don't flame me--not pulling a Sault here),
but a fact. A good friend of mine who is Jewish didn't vote for Bush
but was avidly for the war until recently, because he believed the
Wolfowitz vision of updated the Middle East. We got into a bitter
dispute about it, and I try to avoid discussing it with him. At
least he's come around to see that Iraq was/is a disaster.

I don't imagine that the Israelis think so.

hmm ... i hadn't even thought of that, but i'm sure
you're right about it. when i lived in NYC in the
late 1970s, there were more Jews there than in
Tel Aviv, the largest city in Israel.

the bottom line is that this ILLEGAL administration
sees an opportunity for America to take over the
entire world. by conquering Iraq and setting up
a puppet democracy there, the Iraqi citizens will
make tons of money, be able to eat McDonald's burgers,
watch Hollywood movies, and be as happy and fat as
Americans.

(of course i'm generalizing ... there is certainly
a lot of poverty and other problems in America too.
just trying to make a point.)

i'm sure that the theory is that when the rest of the
people in the Middle East see how good things are
in Iraq, they will voluntarily switch to the American
mode of life (democracy, capitalism, multinational
corporations, etc. ... and the bozos-in-charge probably
hope Christianity infiltrates too).

thus, the increased rapidity of homogenization of
the whole world as pseudo-America ... which was
already happening to a large extent anyway, but at
a slower pace.

the only snag in this whole scenario is that the
bozos-in-charge are too gung-ho and ignorant of
the real situation in Iraq. that land was the
birthplace of civilization c. 3500 BC, and people
there have been dealing with the problems of
civilization for thousands of years longer than
in America.

everyone here knows about Baghdad, but how many
people are aware that Babylon is also in Iraq?
it lies midway between Karbala and Najaf in
central Iraq.

Ur, the birthplace of the biblical Abraham
-- and the last and most glittering capital of
Sumer, the culture which invented writing, the wheel,
and all the other trappings of civilization -- is
near Nasiriyah in southern Iraq.

and Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrians, is
just outside Mosul in northern Iraq.

there are some beliefs and lifestyles in Iraq that
are so firmly entrenched that there's no way America
can go in and just change things around.

OK. That's doesn't make you a racist.

You guys are plainly ignorant about voting demographics. Though it
pains me whenever people are grouped into categories, the fact is
that among Jews, Kerry is about twice as popular as Bush -- while the
reverse is true for Protestants:

http://www.freep.com/news/politics/bush4_20040604.htm

If you're going to make generalizations about groups of people,
something that should deeply trouble you in the first place, then
please at least get your facts straight.

WTF, indeed. Christianity is a beautiful concept: Love. It's the
*institution* of Christianity which has resulted in some of the worst
evil our species has seen. Then again, so have the institutions of
Nazism, Communism, and the Roman Empire (even pre-Christianity).

Concepts are meaningless in dealing with the forces inherent in man The
subconscious is not something that responds to reason. It is much better
to have the shadow out in the open before you have the infamous dual
shadow systems.
US vs. Al Queda other wise known as 'you play my shadow and i will play
yours'.
Michael Ventura pointed that War is the way civilizations make love with
each other.

if that translates into "War is the way
civilizations fuck each other", then i can
certainly see the analogy.

here is the article and shows how Ventura is one step ahead of most.

of course this type of insight will never be measurable by mathematical
methods
