CELESTIAL HARMONIES (GERMANY):

VA: Music Of Indonesia: Malaku & North Malaku 2CD (CH 14232).
"Celestial Harmonies has commenced a series of recordings which
eventually will feature music from all of Indonesia's 26 provinces,
as well as from the island of Timor, now divided into Timor and
independent East Timor. At their closest point, Indonesia is about
as far away from Australia as Cuba is from the United States, but
there are worlds between the neighbours. Whilst the sounds from
Bali and Java are quite well-known, in the west, the traditional music
from the lesser known provinces has been a well-kept secret to most.
The province of Maluku contains many diverse musical cultures, each
based on a unique, creative synthesis of local traditions and outside
influences. Many musical forms are linked to religious practices,
including the church music-influenced styles of the Christians, the
Middle East-influenced musical expressions of the Muslims and the
music associated with ancestor and nature spirit-based religious beliefs." $25.00

This whole area definately deserves to be more explored and documented. The
folkways series captures quite a lot
vol 19 in fact covers some fine work from Malaku. It sound quite a bit like
central asia and folk music from india.

I was able to search and find individual CDs from this company (in the usual places) but I haven't been able to find a complete catalog so I can see just what the panorama of releases is. You got any leads on the company, or where I could see a selection of their catalog?

Cheers,
Jon

Hi Jon!
Unless you really like this label, i would be a bit reluctant as they did a series on Cambodia which was less than the name implied.
the 9 gongs of Cambodia is such an example. look for some of their stuff used first. most of their recordings tend to be somewhat flat. I haven't been inclined to play much of their stuff on my show. But i welcome to be surprised
