For anyone free the evening of Monday October 20th and who is an (un)
lover of viola jokes, there will be a premiere of a new work of mine
for viola and piano by the New York Viola society at Mannes College
of Music, 7:30PM. I wrote the piece for the splendid violist and
composer Lev Zhurbin and he will be joined by Leonard Lehrman at the
piano, which is a good idea since the work is for viola and piano...

Hope to see you there!

Leanne Darling draws from her classical technique, her Arabic and
jazz skills, and her passion for improvisation to break boundaries
of traditional viola playing. A skilled and experienced performer,
Darling has performed as soloist and chamber musician in England,
Austria, Slovenia, France, Florida, Missouri, Connecticut, and New
York in art galleries, film theaters, clubs, and concert halls. She
has degrees from the Eastman School of Music and the Cleveland
Institute of Music and has performed with flutist Julius Baker and
grammy nominated cellist David Darling (no relation). Prior to
moving to New York, Darling was violist of the New Artists Piano
Quartet, and assistant principal violist of the Florida West Coast
Symphony.
Darling began improvising seven years ago and experimenting with
jazz, blues, and Arabic music. She has combined these elements to
produce a unique solo viola performance. Using a sampling/looping
device, Darling generates layers of sound from lyrical melodies to
driving rhythms and textures simulating a whole room full of
musicians. The layers are improvised as well as planned, making each
performance unique. Her musical style ranges from minimalist to free
jazz, blues, Arabic, and ambient music.
Leanne Darling is currently studying classical Arabic music with
virtuoso oudist and violinist Simon Shaheen, and jazz improvisation
with Julie Lyonn Lieberman and David Darling. Recent appearances
include a collaboration with dancers at Dixon place, and a featured
performance at the 2003 ASTA National conference in Columbus, OH.
Darling currently teaches a class on improvisation for strings at
Op.118 Harlem Center for Strings.

in the MidAtlantic region, appearing as guest soloist with such
notable groups as the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia, Bucks County
Choral Society and Lehigh University Choral Arts. Regular concert
appearances with the Cathedral Choral Society include the annual
Messiah concert. Ms. Field sang as soprano soloist with the
Pennsylvania Sinfonia Orchestra in Brahms Ein deutsches Requiem for
which the Easton Express-Times said: "She easily soared above the
musicians and singers as a kind of overriding celestial presence."
A frequent recitalist, Ms. Field has garnered rave reviews for her
performances of composers ranging from Bach to Hindemith. She has
been included in the Valley Vivaldi recital series, singing Bach and
Scarlatti, as one of the only vocalists to be part of these

the song cycle "Regimen Sanitatis Salerni" written especially for
Field. As guest artist with the MidAtlantic Chamber Music Society,
Field sang selections by Brahms and William Duckworth. The
Wilmington NewsJournal heralded her performance: "The Duckworth
songs let Field display her dramatic range...Her diction was
wonderful and her ability to change moods and styles between songs
impressive."
Opera credits include Baby Doe in OperaDelaware's production of The
Ballad of Baby Doe. Ms. Field has been an active participant in the
Lehigh University Opera program, having sung the role of Berta in Il
barbiere di Siviglia and Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro to critical
acclaim. Ms. Field created the role of Mrs. Murry in the premiere of

performance: "Debra Field's sensitive acting and singing stood out
in the role of their mother." Other opera roles include Despina in
CosÏ fan tutte, May in Earl Kim's Footfalls and Elle in Poulenc's
La
voix humaine.
Her most recent engagement included a benefit for the Suzuki
Foundation with Paul Salerni, composer and professor at Lehigh
University. This past spring, she was soprano soloist for
Mendelssohn's Elijah with the Pennsylvania Sinfonia Orchestra and
Camerata Singers. She also performed Vaughan William's Sea Symphony
with the Reading Choral Society and his Benedicite with the Oxford

Paul Salerni is Professor of Music at Lehigh University where he
teaches composition, theory, and directs LUVME (the Lehigh
University Very Modern Ensemble), an ad hoc group of undergraduate,
faculty, and guest musicians which have given over 60 concerts of
contemporary music in the past 20 years. He received a Ph.D. in
composition from Harvard University where he studied with Earl Kim.
Salerni is an expert in the performance of Kim's music. Besides
producing and directing two festivals and several concerts of Kim's
music at Lehigh, Salerni has recently been featured as a guest
pianist and lecturer with the International Sejong Soloists. In
collaboration with them, he has given performances of Kim's music in
Seoul, New York City, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and
at the Aspen Music Festival.
Dr. Salerni's own music has been played throughout the United
States, in Canada, in Europe, and in China. His orchestra music has
been performed by the New Haven Symphony, the New York Chamber
Symphony, the Lehigh Valley Chamber Orchestra, the Schuylkill
Symphony, the Young People's Philharmonic of the Lehigh Valley, the
International Chamber Orchestra, the Kinhaven Orchestra, and LUVME.
His songs have been presented by the Washington Square Contemporary
Music Series and the Derriere Garde Festival in New York City, the
Gabriel Chamber Ensemble, the Contrasts Chamber Artists of
Philadelphia, at the Shenyang International Music Festival (China),
at SUNY Stony Brook, and at the University of Washington. He is best
known for his music for and about children; his recent violin
concerto/fable entitled The Big Sword and the Little Broom has been
called an "extraordinary gift to the audience." Another Italian
fable, The Old Witch and the New Moon, has had numerous performances
including a performance in Italian this past summer at the
international music festival in Canna, Calabria. Both fables have
texts written by poet Dana Gioia, an example of Salerni's close
working relationship with that great American poet. Their past work
together has included numerous art songs and choral pieces, and they
are presently working on a one-act opera to be presented in an
unstaged version this season.
Salerni is a dedicated educator having conducted numerous
performances of student musical theatre and operatic productions at
Lehigh. He was part of the team that organized and taught Lehigh's
first semester abroad program in Vicenza, Italy, and in 1995, he
received Lehigh's most prestigious acknowledgement of excellence in
teaching, the Stabler Award. He also serves on the Board of
Directors of the Suzuki Association of the Americas and was recently
named its Chair-elect.
