more and more of 1984

As some of you who have read the book might recall, one of the main
precepts of the 1984 society is permanent warfare, since it propels
the economy and uses resources without really giving any concrete
benefits to the populace, which might become ungovernable if they
become too well-off or better educated.

In the NY Times today (08-29-03) under "Economy Shows Unexpected
Strength" we have this:

"A surge in military spending connected with the war in Iraq was also
a big contributor to second-quarter growth..."

and therein lies the exactly the problem we face today:
the state has grown out of control, is too big and too powerful,
and cares far more about its own needs than about the needs
of those it was originally created to serve: the public.

it's been that way in the USA for a long time, but previously
it always just looked like big government gone out of control.
the recent twist is that now it's become so obvious that
the tiny ruling elite holds all the power, and that they
don't give a damn about the rest of us.
