For those in the New York City area, please come to an interesting
and varied evening of new music, Wednesday, August 20, 8PM as part of
the "World Turning Festival" at the Medicine Show Theatre, 549 W 52nd
3rd fl.

http://www.lovesphere.org/wtf/

The mighty cellist Dan Barrett will be performing my piece _CHAB_
(invert the letters to find the hidden motive...)

We just rehearsed tonight...

A work from 1991 this piece, although basically in 12-equal, uses
extensive use of glissandi and the harmonic series.

There will be lots of other interesting performances that evening,
which starts at 8PM. It should run most of the evening.

The "World Turning Festival" concentrats, in general, on cutting edge
music and jazz, so I'm particularly pleased to be included on the
program.

In fact, the promo advertises all the "young composers..." (ahem...)

Hope any of you can make it for a fun time (call xxx for a fun
time...) Tix only $10. Here's more info on the lineup:

>>>> BRIEF PAUSE
>>>>
>>>> Davide Zannoni, born in Italy, started to play the drums at a
very young age. He managed to annoy his parents, at the same time
playing virtually any type of music on the planet. He then quit
performing and devoted himself to write music, creating a body of
works that reflect his omnivorous taste.
>>>> A critic in Italy recently hailed him as "An heir to Frank
Zappa", although this unfortunately refers only to musical language
and not royalties.

>>>> Jikkai (The Ten Worlds)(2000)
>>>> World Premiere
>>>> by Davide Zannoni
>>>> Claire Chan, violin & Ling Cao, cello
>>>>
>>>> Jikkai, for violin and violoncello, is titled after a principle
in Nichiren's Buddism. Jikkai literally means "The Ten Worlds," which
are ten life-conditions that all human beings experience. They are
dynamic states, and each person constantly goes in and out of them
daily, usually with a tendency to experience some more than others.
They are:
>>>> Hell,
>>>> Hunger, Animality, Anger, Tranquillity, Heaven, Learning,
>>>> Realization, Bodhisattva, Buddhahood. The music tries to depict
the different emotions inherent in each state, their
interconnectedness, and the quick shifts between one state and
another. Different styles and compositional techniques have been used.
>>>> ............................
>>>> Gordon Beeferman and Estelle Woodward's duo focuses on
integrating live improvised music and dance. Primordial Forms
explores a dynamic and vocabulary that they have developed over
time. Their goal is to challenge conventional boundaries within
their fields and create work that celebrates and expands the time-
honored forms of improvisation. Gordon Beeferman is a pianist and
composer who has performed at venues such as the Cunningham
>>>> Studio, MATA Festival, and the Knitting Factory. His
compositions have been performed throughout the US.
>>>> Choreographer/performer Estelle Woodward studied at CalArts and
Bennington College and has performed extensively in NYC, as a soloist
>>>> and with her quintet Loophole. She is an organizer of Improvised
and Otherwise, a yearly festival in Brooklyn.

award. Unfortunately, it was shut down to public access in April when
its host, TellMe Networks, ran into financial troubles. It is
