On the other hand:

if a theorist goes and actually plays music, I think it is better than a theorist *not* going and playing music. And that is simply my opinion, and I support Paul's efforts in both areas, even if some of it doesn't mean anything to me.

But that is completely aside from whether or not Paul's colleagues will miss his input on any particular topic.
