The FCC ruling. Take Action.

The passing of the FCC de-regulation ruling is something I find not just a
little frightening. The very same media conglomerates (of which Clear Channel
Communications is the most notorious recent example) that controlled and
disseminated the bland, one-sided patriotic blather that counted for
"news" during the recent "war" are going to be even more in control of
the airwaves now unless we make a ruckus. . . and obviously, since we
didn't succeed in preventing the ruling, it's got to be a pretty big
ruckus.

There's still a chance/hope that Congress can act to overturn the ruling.

Here's a letter I drafted (ok. . .dashed off, so feel free to modify it)
to local representatives/senators. FAX it, snail-mail it, e-mail it:

Dear :

I am extremely disappointed by the recent FCC ruling deregulating
the media of this country.

I hope that you and our colleagues in Congress will work to
reverse this decision quickly and solidly.

This de-regulation is anti-democratic, anti-free-speech and,
incidentally, anti-capitalist.

The inevitable result will be fewer and fewer, larger and larger
media conglomerates controlling all the information that the majority of
Americans recieve about their world. This in turn will effect the way
Americans make political decisions, in the voting booth and elsewhere.

Clearly, large media conglomerates come with an ideological bias,
one that cares nothing for the public interest, but only for the the
survival and domination of the said conglomerates. This means that
alternative and minority voices will have less and less access to the
public ear thus curtailing both democracy and free speech throughout the
nation.

And if youre a lover of the "free" market, consider this: one or
two corporations swallowing an entire industry, with the help of the
governmental agencies such as the FCC, is not capitalism. If it
resembles anything, it resembles Soviet-style state-run media. Is that
what we want? For our country to become another totalitarian state?

Thank you for your work on this issue.

I just got back from a trip to FedEx and I listening
to All Things Considered on WNYC. They introduced
a segment as being sponsored by Clear Channel Communications.

WNYC is public radio!
