One might add that the murderous Indonesian regime that committed
atrocities (and/or condoned them by local Moslem militias) against the
largely Roman Catholic population of East Timor is also Moslem.

It's rather difficult to find a pacific regime to support or just do
business with in the Third World. I don't think isolationism is the
answer to US international problems.

I need to make a correction to my earlier post. Although the first
attacks by Moslem Arab forces against the Byzantines began during the
last year of Mohammad's life, large scale attacks against Persian and
Egypt started under his successor the following year.

You know, John, if the Byzantines didn't team up with the Varaginians
(Swedish Vikings) against the Khazar (who were Jewish) and force them out of
southern Russia, only to be turned into a refugee nation following an attack
by the Horde.

The Khazar chose Judaism in c. 980 in order to balance out Christianity and
Islam. By most reports, they were a tolerant society, and quite strong
militarily. The Byzantines betrayed them it appears.
