The attacks in New York and at the Pentagon have
prompted Congress to begin considering requiring all
----------------------------------------===
citizens and non-citizens to carry identity cards.
========-----------------------------------------

Those might be ³smart cards² storing data such
as fingerprints and travel records. Reviewing the
-----------------==============
questions that congressional leaders were raising last
---------------------------------------
Thursday, House Democratic Leader Dick Gephardt told
--------
Fox News, ³What kind of identity cards would we make
-------
citizens and others carry? Would they carry more
-----
information?²

Gephardt acknowledged that Americans, in the
past, rejected ideas such as a national identification
card as a possible infringement on civil liberties. But
he indicated that last week¹s terror attacks had
changed the nature of the debate. Congress, he said,
--------
would need to quickly debate measures such as a
------------------------------------------------
national ID card.

etc.

In a wide-ranging interview, Bono gave dire warnings of
an immediate future she predicted could include intense
-------------
scrutiny of airline passengers, a national system of
--------------------
fingerprinting and identification cards and the specter
---------------------------------------
of chemical and biological attacks on the United
States.
...
"I think the most important thing here is for the
American people to realize that it is really in their
hands," Bono said. "I think it is important that
members of Congress always recognize that national
security is the No. 1 priority, even if it is not No. 1
in polling data."
...
When she returns to the Capitol she will prioritize
support for measures that increase security at national
landmarks, airports and other places. "The key here is
to crack down. I think people are going to have to
recognize that some of their conveniences are going to
be gone," Bono said. "Whether we are talking about
national ID cards I don¹t know, or fingerprinting of
everybody, I don¹t know where we are going to go with
security. I¹m glad to show my identification where I
------------------------------------------
need to go."

On Sept. 11, life changed. We, as a nation,
unfortunately, also have to change. We must realize
--------------
that if we want to be absolutely assured of our
------------------------------------------
security in our own land that we will have to make some
-------------------------------------------------------
sacrifices.
----------
...
We are being asked to relinquish some of what made this
----------
country so great for the short term, and we should
---------
comply.
