select quotes:

>> Feb. 19 - Facing global opposition to a rush to war,
>> the United States and Britain will introduce a new
>> U.N. resolution in the coming days and set a deadline
>> for Iraq to cooperate fully with weapons inspectors ...

>> Some of Washington's allies, under pressure at home
>> from public opposition to war, have said they need
>> U.N. approval to proceed against Iraq.

>> But the climate for a new resolution has worsened
>> following the latest report, in which [chief weapons
>> inspector] Blix gave Iraq modest praise for its
>> compliance with inspectors.

>> The United States has said Security Council backing
>> would be desirable but not necessary to start a war
>> with Iraq, which Washington has said threatens the
>> security of the Middle East and the United States.

>> Without a [UN] resolution, the United States risks
>> losing support of even its closest allies, including
>> Britain, whose population is overwhelmingly opposed
>> to the use of force in Iraq unless the government
>> has U.N. blessing.

>> But tough negotiations between Turkey and the
>> United States over the terms of U.S. military use
>> of bases in Turkey continued. ...
>> While Turkish bases would be "desirable" as a
>> springboard for a possible invasion of Iraq from
>> the north, [Ari] Fleischer said the U.S. military had
>> the flexibility to carry out its mission without
>> Turkey's help.

in this day and age, the isolationist philosophy and
arrogance of the Bush administration's position would
be ludicrous, were it not so horrific to contemplate.

so exactly what is the plan? to alienate the
whole rest of the world, bomb it all to smithereens,
then repopulate it with Americans?

meanwhile, does anyone remember about a week ago
the government of North Korea said it had missiles
with which it could bomb California, and the CIA
agreed that it was true?

since i live in a city filled with likely targets,
i'm a little more concerned about the threat from
*them* than from Iraq, yet the media and US government
seem not to care much about that threat, when the
prospect of owning so much Iraqi oil is at stake.
