Zaire and Democratic Republic of the Congo are the
same country, and during colonial days was called
Belgian Congo. Central African Republic was a French colony.

here are some detailed comments:

the country i've been writing about on this list
(where the big civil war has been going on) is
currently named Democratic Republic of the Congo,
formerly known as Zaire.

the country is currently known by a wide variety
of names and abbreviations: DRC, DR Congo, Congo-Kinshasa,
and Congo (Zaire).

here is a summary history of the country:

1885 proclamation of Congo Free State, a Belgian colony
1908 Belgian parliament assumed full administrative and
political responsibility for the colony, renamed Belgian Congo
1960 achieves independence as Democratic Republic of the Congo
1965 Mobuto's second seizure of power
1971 Mobuto renames country Zaire
1997 Mobuto deposed, name Democratic Republic of Congo restored

Rwanda and Burundi, two small countries which both border the
eastern edge of DRC, became German territories under 1885
European agreement, transferred to Belgium after WWI. so
Belgium ruled the vast contiguous area covered today by DRC,
Rwanda, and Burundi.

the reason for the variety of names for DRC is because
there is another country named Congo: it's official name
is Republic of the Congo (without "Democratic"). when
DRC is referred to as Congo-Kinshasa, this country is
called Congo-Brazzaville, each country being identified
by its respective capital city.

Congo-Brazzaville used to be a part of French Equatorial Africa,
which was a French federation in west-central Africa, composed
of four constituent territories: Gabon, Middle Congo (which
is now Congo-Brazzaville), Chad, and Ubangi-Shari (now the
Central African Republic). The capital was Brazzaville.

Germany also had Kamerun (today called Cameroon), and
control of it passed to France after WWI, when it became
part of French Equatorial Africa.

here's a map of French Equatorial Africa in 1922:
http://www.sandafayre.com/atlas/feqaia.htm

note that F.E.A. included Ubangi-Shari, now Central African
Republic. the only other "offical" name this country ever
had was Central African Empire, back in the late 1970s when
its dictator, Jean-Bdel Bokassa, declared himself Emperor.

right -- the big one, labeled "Democratic Republic of the Congo",
was the former Belgian Congo. the smaller one, on this map
called simply "Congo", was formerly a French colony, part of
French Equatorial Africa. the country called "Central African
Republic" was formerly Ubangi-Shari, and was also a part of
French Equatorial Africa.
