This is a little old, but so well written and thought out, I couldn't help sharing it.

thanks for this, John. it is indeed one of the
finest articles i've seen about 9/11.

the doubts cast by Roy upon the stated aims of
the current US "war on terror" got me thinking
to pose this question:

if the current US administration is really as
humanitarian as it claims to be ( -- and it *is*
taking active steps to ensure regime change in
Afghanistan and Iraq, about which i'm *extremely*
cynical), why is it doing so little to stop the
carnage in Africa?

take a look at today's lead articles in _Kinshasa Daily_:

if those headlines have changed by the time the reader
sees this, here are the links to the relevant stories:

war is despicable and evil when adults do it.

i can't even think of a word that describes my feelings
about children being participants.

... and here in the USA, i'd bet that the vast majority
of people are not even aware of what's happening in Congo.

This is one thing that I confront again and again each time I travel. Although we have the ability to become the best educated people in the world, and by virtue of our military power, the greatest tool for good the world has ever seen, we continually squander our "birthright" on sports, entertainment, and mindless consumption. It was widely bandied about that 9-11 changed everything; we were finally becoming educated, involved, world citizens. Everything changed, alright. Politics grew nastier, divisions cleaved deeper, and willfully ignorant jingoists ascended to power. Thanks for all your passion and commitment, Joe. We will weather this, but not until we wake up. Keep it up.
