Living

Aiyeyeye, that requires nytimes registration!

Anyway, I do think Eminem is a good rapper, and he seems to
be the last pop artist standing in the post-911 environment.

But the production (the music) is terribly weak IMO. Listen
to groups like Jurassic 5, early Cypress Hill, NWA, and get
back to me.

Uh... I'm not touching that!

There was meant to be a smiley there.n I've never heard
Dolly Parton's stuff, but I wouldn't be surprised if she's
one of those in the much-better-than-you'd-think category.
I like J. Ligon just fine, though I admit that he doesn't
come close to being in my living American top three (though
one microtonal composer might make it -- E. Blackwood).

Hmm. Bernstein and Milhaud are dead.

It's a tough question, because history provides a very
valuable filter. There are all sorts of composers tucked
away in schools that you never hear... there was a very
good one at IU... he was very little-recognized even among
the faculty at IU, but he had an incredible talent. I
can't even remember his name... Don...

...gotta love Google!! I searched for "IU composer Don"
and it returned Don Freund, first hit.

oh yes you have. remember a few years ago, when
everywhere you went you heard Whitney Houston singing
"I ... will always love you..."?

Dolly Parton wrote that song.

Parton is an excellent composer, and long ago,
before she became a movie superstar, she was one
of the great country-western singers. she's
been around for a long time, and has been recognized
as a talent by those in the know for just as long.

Whitney's remake of that song is what really got
Parton's music into ears all around the world
... and also got some serious money rolling into
Parton's bank account.

She even covers Stairway to Heaven on a recent album.

Actually, no.

? She's been in a movie? I only know her as a
country singer. The 'better than you might think
category' is full of them.
