how weird that you post this just now.

this afternoon, having lunch with a roommate,
we got into a pretty heavy discussion of the Bush
administration's "hawk" policy and some things about
9/11 that are never mentioned by the media.

We talked a bit about Osama bin Laden, and my
roommate brought up "Hate Week" from _1984_.

"Hate Week", "feelies", "newspeak", "soma" ...
it's really creepy to me how these two great
books doing a sort of futuristic dark satire
have been scary enough to keep those, and the other
all-too-plausible developments written about,
from becoming a reality for so many decades,
but now, all of a sudden since January 2001
(Bush's inauguration), they're all so quickly
becoming a reality.
