We had a discussion about Le Pen i think a bit before you joined, and
the fact that the vichy govt. was never as dismantled as much as it's german
neighbors seem to be. I was in the south of France for 3 months and the le
Pen posters were solid everywhere and my host filled me in as to how very
popular he was where i was.

My confusion on the anti semitism in the US which surely exist, but
can't imagine how they get figures.

i'm not sure what the criterion was for "hard-core" and so on, but
the following figures were presented:

1,000 american adults were polled

20% of Americans agreed with the statement "Jews have too much power
in the U.S. today."

more than half of foreign-born Hispanics (55%) agree with the
assertion that "Jews don't care what happens to anyone but their own
kind."

Forty-four percent (44%) of Hispanics born outside the U.S. agree
with the assertion that "Jews were responsible for the death of
Christ," compared with 26% of those born in the U.S.

presumably these and a bunch of other questions were used to
categorize respondents into the least, middle, and most anti-semitic
categories. seems kinda silly actually.

whatever, i'm not terribly interested. i just try (and, i think,
succeed) to give of myself to, and interact without undue fear or
suspicion towards, everyone around me with no regard to race,
religion, ethnicity, etc. -- it seems to induce people to act that
way towards me.

i found the criteria:

there were 11 statements.

people who agreed with none or one of the statements were classified
as not anti-semitic (48%).

people who agreed with two to five of the statements were considered
to be in the "middle" category (35%).

six or more agrees = "hard-core" (17%).

the 11 statements were:

1. Jews stick together more than other Americans.

2. Jews always like to be at the head of things.

3. Jews are more loyal to Israel than America.

4. Jews have too much power in the U.S. today.

5. Jews have too much control and influence on Wall Street.

6. Jews have too much power in the business world.

7. Jews have a lot of irritating faults.

8. Jews are more willing than others to use shady practices to get
what they want.

9. Jewish businesspeople are so shrewd that others don't have a fair
chance at competition.

10. Jews don't care what happens to anyone but their own kind.

11. Jews are not just as honest as other businesspeople.

notice, no mention of sharon in these questions.

in case anyone cares, here's the percentage of people who
answered "probably true" to each question:

> 1. Jews stick together more than other Americans.
51%

> 2. Jews always like to be at the head of things.
39%

> 3. Jews are more loyal to Israel than America.
35%

> 4. Jews have too much power in the U.S. today.
31%

27%

24%

22%

21%

19%

> 10. Jews don't care what happens to anyone but their own kind.
16%

> 11. Jews are not just as honest as other businesspeople.
16%

the survey also included a large number of positive and negative
statements which were not used to evaluate level of anti-semitism.
for example:

Jews place a strong emphasis on the importance of family life
80%

Jews have contributed much to the cultural life of America
69%

Because of their own history of fighting discrimination, Jews have a
special committment to social justice and civil rights
58%

ok, i'm sick of this topic.

I couldn't help but laugh at some of the more ludicrous. Although if asked
about other people here in LA
no. 1 would appear to true of many immigrants . there as MANY sections in La
where it is hard to find english outside of the street signs. I recently
went into a stationary store and was told " no paper, we have no paper!"

etc.etc.etc.

I bet you could substitute almost any ethnic group that is perceived as doing well, say Chinese, in place of "Jew" and get a similar response. I think the responses are driven by the type of question and not the subject of the question.

i would like to chime in and mention everytime the subject
comes to statistics, i say " if a millionare walks into the
room we're all worth $200,000 each ON AVERAGE"....

and YES, some people get really pissed.

so go figure, is it really all that important to worry about
the very incorrect and false and mis-leading and usually
hurtful racial non-sense that passes as 'fact'....

i could be more specific, but then i would
just get ranting, and boring...

best, buzzy^

i'll pass.

the stated purpose of the survey is not to measure the amount of
antisemitism but to compare the level of antisemitism among different
groups (college students, hispanic immigrants, etc.). the press
release distorted this intention.
