You know how we're always hearing about "Star Wars" as the ultimate
cold-war film, and that the "Evil Empire" was of course, the Soviet Union.

But as with all great works of art (well, . . . .hmmmmmm. .. .) you can
always read it more than one way.

After all, the "Empire" did have a Senate. . . . Russia just had a
parliament. . .

I thought it was Nazi Germany -- hence the storm troopers.

That sounds like a Roman throwback. The Senate was the last relic of the
Republic to be dissolved. As is stated fairly explicitly. Sorry I don't
have the script to quote from.

these movies were terrible. at the end of the first i said darth was his
mother and it took another 90 minutes of film to get to basically a slight
variation on this lack of imagination.

If you saw Episode II you couldn't help but notice the comments
made by Palpatine to the Senate: 'I'll give the emergency war
powers back as soon as they're no longer needed'.

Reign of Fire seemed to this viewer to address military action
as a response to terrorism, though it was a terrible film in
every respect.

In Spiderman, we get New Yorkers saying, 'You mess with one of
us, you mess with all of us' from the bridge. Pretty weak for
an otherwise excellent film.

Shit, Kraig, I couldn't disagree more. Though I don't agree with
the USSR=Empire interp.
