According to the science section of the NY Times today, twenty years
ago today exactly was the birthday of :-)

It was invented, apparently, by computer scientist Scott E. Fahlman,
and his text read (for those not getting the Times):

"I propose that the following character sequence for joke markers:

:-)

Read it sideways. Actually, it is probably more economical to mark
things that are NOT jokes, given current trends. For this, use :-("

Frankly, I've been using :) which is rather a corrupted simplified
version (could also be a music repeat sign!). I'll try, from now on,
to use the original :-)
