But this particular cloud is over Asia - it's their cloud!

sorry, Jeff, but that's not correct. the prevailing winds
all across North America are from west to east, so in So.Cal
the wind blows the pollution *away* from the Pacific Ocean,
and toward the inland deserts. near San Diego, this means
that the nearby mountains to the east block a lot of it
and it gets trapped over once-beautiful foothill communities
like Alpine, which continuously rates the worst air quality
in San Diego County according to the Union Tribune weather page.

those of us who live in San Diego proper *are* still fortunate
that not much of the pollution sits over us, but it's going
to the east and not to the west. LA, on the other hand,
sits in a giant bowl and collects the smog.
