To give the devil his due!..............
Do we find his methods unsound?
sir , i see no method at all
(to paraphrase Martin sheen in Apoc.now)...............
Much of the worlds music has no need of mathematics to fully engage the soul
of the listener. likewise our best mathematics has left the listener to go
else where to find something with any thing even mildly engaging of a total
being.

Math can help us, but only so far.
Math can oppress the muse as much as anything addiction

Maybe it takes a "madmen" to balance the "madness" of such "outside of
time" fetishes

if any of you remember me, you've noticed that i
haven't been around here (any of the tuning lists) much
for the past 4 months. ever wonder why? -- see above.

my website-with-Tuning Dictionary is still there
to help those who need it.

rest assured, someday i'll feel like coming back,
but for now ...

i'll be out riding around on my motorcycle ...
so keep me in your prayers, that i may be safe.

otherwise, i can be found at the beach.

all the world's music has no need of mathematics to fully engage the
soul of the listener.

you have to take it for what it is. musicians make music in real
time, in the culture in which they live. but sometimes they seek
something different, something unheard. the reaching takes many
forms, as i'm sure you know well. you reach with your heart, you read
with your spirit, and sometimes you reach with your head.

me or B?

Hello Paul!
I was not suggesting otherwise. It seem we have to reach in all 3 ways
sometimes to take even a little step.
I take Dot's article as a reminder (and not related to BML) more than an
accusation.
And as Graham points out, we need to be reminded of any extremes.

my post was directed personally at neither you nor "B",
nor "against" anyone else in particular. just in general,
after reading Dan Stearns's farewell message and the responses
to it, i was referring to my own getting tired of spending
so much time on these lists and neglecting so many other
aspects of my life that i used to find enriching.

after the big blow-out last summer on the crazy_music list
(cf. "BM") and the backlash that ensued, i had already
decided more-or-less unconsciously to curtail a lot of
my tuning list activity and try to focus more on creating
webpages and actual music, with the particular exception
of my continuing research into meantones and Schoenberg's
theories, on tuning-math.

then, just at the moment when i had decided that a vacation
from online activity was in order, i was forced by my shitty
phone company to go offline, and it took a month to get
reconnected. i took that as an omen that it really was
time for a break. then i got a bad case of the flu, went
on a long fast to get rid of that and then continue to
detox, and then bought a motorcycle (which i'd wanted for
a long time).

so now i'm eating a much healthier diet and riding the crap
out of the bike, and spending a lot of time at the beach,
and i'm enjoying life a lot more than i have in years.
it's an important and rejuvenating break for me. i'll
rotate back to the tuning community eventually, but
for now ... surf's up!, and the road goes on forever.

if anyone's interested ...

here's a webpage about my "new" (really old and junky) bike
http://www.ixpres.com/interval/monzo/radian/mybike.htm

and i can be seen in this photo of a recent big charity
biker event sponsored by the club to which i belong
