"In why-get-into-an-arms-race-that-you-can't-win news, U.S. Rep. Howard Berman, (D-CA), has proposed legislation that'll make it legal for entertainment companies to flood peer-to-peer networks with false songs, redirects, etc. in an effort to halt piracy and effectively render the networks themselves useless.

Coincidentally, of course, Mr. Berman's largest contributors for campaign '02 were, in order, Disney, AOL, Vivendi, Viacom, News Corp., then a union, then Dreamworks and Sony..."

* Piracy fight gets serious *
Record makers could win the right to carry out hack attacks on music sharing services if a US proposal becomes law.

Not only will it not end, it will get more and more stupid. They have effectively shut down the smallest and most innovative internet broadcasters-- those who played "unpopular" music, and thus were unable to pay the fees. They are pushing a bill to force all analog-to-digital chips to have copyright detection and shutoff *BUILT IN* to the chip. They are trying to force second hand CD stores to pay a fee on each used CD sold. I would not be surprised if they tried to get a fee for second hand music, charging me for the booming bass I hear every saturday night from the car stereos. Feh! The worthless bums!

I do think (hope ?!) that this will all come to a head and implode before long, undeniably self-defeating behaviour that it is. But, I can't help but feel at least a little scared of how bad things are going to get before they get better. Until people take a serious stand and pose a serious threat to the absurdity of these fascists, the danger will remain.

this statement stands quite well liberated from the context it was made
