zawinul and 15-equal

i had a jazz textbook which claimed that josef zawinul, in his post
weather report band "heavy weather", experimented with 15-tone equal
temperament. i have not been able to find any references to a band
called "heavy weather", let along zawinul exploring microtonality.
anyone have any leads?

Nothing that I know about 15, but Z recorded probably the 'breakthrough' album of the band early on, and the album was titled "Heavy Weather". IIRC, the lineup was Z on keys, Jaco: bass, Wayne Shorter: sax/winds, Alex Acuna and Manolo Badrena: perc. Beyond smoking...

One thing I *had* read in a couple of places is that one of the kbds Z used to use (can't remember which one) had one of those functions that would remap the keys backwards, with the high pitches to the left and low to the right. He said he would riff like that and it would give him new ideas and break out of ruts.

Cheers,
Jon

that's the band "Weather Report", Jon. this was a different
band, "weather update" might have been another name for it.

HEY! Now we are *really* getting it garbled up!

Yes, the original band was *named* "Weather Report", and they recorded a fine album *named* "Heavy Weather".

I do not believe there was a *band* named "Heavy Weather". But I've been wrong before!

Jon

Paul,

I can't find any reference to any 'band' going under "Weather Update" involving Joe Z. Here is the "Heavy Weather" album I/we mentioned:

I think Weather Update was a Z group without Wayne Shorter.

anyone have the album _dialects_?

http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=A47rn28gr054a

if so, do you hear anything that might be non-12 on it?

six notes or one with 15 notes."

Paul,

Well, thanks to db, I'm glad we got that "Weather Update" cleared up. I swear I never even heard of that band (and I like Steve Khan), but looks like it wasn't exactly long-lived!

OK, I'll bite: what is all the big excitement about this?

Cheers,
Jon

Funny about that: I 'googled' on "Weather Report" and "Heavy Weather", but not "Weather Update" (and didn't put in names, etc.). I didn't want to wade through the stuff that was *actually about* weather!

Jon

Not besides the voices unless it past my ear but being so used to
microtones , they don't always stand out. I like the album though but not
monumental.
