Re: Metatuning description -- a clarification

Hello, there, everyone, and on reading my suggestion for a possible
revision in the Metatuning statement of purpose, I realize that a
typographical error might have made one point a bit unclear.

My basic idea was to revise the question raised about Paul Erlich in
this statement to one of whether he is the "true 20th-century scion of
Rameau," and if so, whether this suggests a xenharmonic law that total
harmonic entropy is always increasing. I added that I wasn't sure if
spawn or scion "_of_ something else" might not better fit the
statement.

What I meant was that I wasn't sure if "spawn" or "scion" _or_
something else -- in reference to his alleged Rameau-like role --
might be the best word. I was concerned that my own choice, "scion,"
might sound a bit over-literary, with "spawn" (as in the present
statement) maybe toward the other extreme.

Maybe I should leave it there.

Incidentally, posting via Yahoo to crazy_music and this group during
my recent problems with outgoing e-mail suggests to me that something
very strange was going on with the Yahoo posting interface to the
Tuning List. When I posted to these other groups, my "Send" was
followed by a new menu screen, a logical and user-friendly choice.

Why the Tuning group interface would respond to my "Send" by returning
me to a screen with the same message and the choices "Send" "Edit"
"Cancel" -- and, as I recall, at least sometimes also a message in
Lynx referring to the Send item I had just selected "Form Submission
Button: Use Right Arrow or Return to Select" -- I'm not sure.

Unless/until some other unwary user of the lynx browser attempts to
post to the Tuning List via the yahoo site, maybe it's just a bit of
curious history for the Metatuning chronicles; but if it might help
others to contact Yahoo tech support about this, I'd be glad to take
part in such an effort or to help test a fix.

Most appreciatively,

Margo

Hello, there, everyone, and I would like very warmly to thank you, Dan
Wolf, both for your original post on the Tuning List and for your
remarks here in response to my offhand comments which could have and
should have referenced your germinal statement.

Thanks to your contributions both here and there, I am now in a
position to write a better and more informed response for the Tuning
List. Originally I was planning this last week, and then problems with
outgoing e-mail occurred which I am happy to report now seem resolved.

Your remarks about gamelan are especially helpful, and I would say
more generally that you have stated a compelling educational vision.
A response approaching worthiness may be an imposing task, but to
attempt it is a great honor.

Most appreciatively,

Margo Schulter

Some of the earlier posts and one of the polls wouldn't make sense if
I changed the description now.

It was supposed to be a joke to start with, so I don't know if "over
literary" would be a problem. But I do think "spawn of Satan" is
funnier, whatever it means. I'm somewhat disappointed that 5 people
agree with it in the poll, but there you go ...

If somebody objected on theological grounds, I might change it, but
it's been taken fairly light-heartedly so far.

Yes, the online interface is weird whatever browser you use, and has
always been so. I've never known a message to get lost after I
pressed "send" and logged in if directed. Definitely wait for the
message to arrive by e-mail before reposting, and you may find it
useful to take a copy before you send in case it does go missing (I
don't know how you'd do this with Lynx).
