this is fantastic. while Tamagno is using a lot of
vibrato, the width of it is not as great as what you
hear nowadays.

can someone p l e a s e find a recording of
the incredible Mary Garden, and post that?

i had read about Garden's amazing voice for years
until finally i heard her one day on the radio.
it was just gorgeous ... her vibrato was beautiful,
the width of it increasing sparingly only in the most
effective places, with a clarity of both pitch and
diction that i've n e v e r heard in any other
opera singer.

but in general, to my ears, the older recordings attest
that singers back then used narrower vibrato than they
do now.

and how about the fantastic microtonal sound of the piano
when it hits that first chord!? yowsers!!
