Chris,

Glad somebody got these to download--yahoo is frustratingly unreliable
in this regard!

With pieces like these I'm trying establish and then work a few simple
ideas--with the uptempo tune it was that cyclic progression that
alternates bass notes and chords, and with the ballad it was that
expressionistic little melody. I like to work off little ideas like
that and try and take more and more chances, work it into more and
more corners.

With the first piece, think Tatum--not so much vis a vis (because
that's pretty much hopeless), but in much the same way that he
fascinated Conlon Nancarrow for instance. With the ballad think of
Schoenberg's early piano music, pieces like Op. 11 and Op. 19 if they
were seen from an improvisational jazz perspective. Those were some of
my influences with this material.

Anyway, thanks for listening and taking the time to comment, I do
appreciate it--12-tet and all!

take care,

--Dan Stearns
