Setback for distribution of retunable keyboards

I don't know how closely you folks follow the news. You may have
noticed stories like these:

http://www.france24.com/en/20110228-oman-protesters-maintain-road-blocks

http://www.cnbc.com//id/41819212

If you found my blog, you may think that these things are happening
near where I live. And they are, about 60 km away. I'm writing this
at my desk, at a government college, which is therefore a target. The
confirmed death is of a student from here. The rather dramatic
message from above is that we're risking our lives being here and we
can leave at 4:30 if no students turn up. There was a heated meeting
with some student activists (which I wasn't present at) and a few yobs
turned up outside this afternoon.

I should be fine. It's a quiet village. But this is all completely
unprecedented so we don't know what's going to happen. If the call
does come for foreigners to evacuate, I'm not far at all from the
border, and can probably walk it if I have to.

As to the subject line -- the hypermarket they burned down did stock
12-note octave retunable keyboard/synthesizers. It's a shame to see
it go. Also worrying for some of the teachers who live right near it.

Take care!

Graham

Damn man... hope you're OK. Are you planning to get a flight out of there?

Is the UN involved in your area, and are they sending out Sitreps?
When I was in Haiti, I was signed up for the UN Sitreps that they'd
send out every time something went down... it was good to know where
to go and where not to go.

Are there cheap Spirit Airlines flights out of there?

I'm planning to sit tight. It's quiet in the village, nobody's
threatened me, and the people are more worried about the trouble than
angry with the government.

Not that I've heard of. It's a domestic matter. Not a big deal on
the international stage.

> Are there cheap Spirit Airlines flights out of there?

There's no airport in Oman this side of Sohar. If it did get bad,
like I said before, I'd get a lift or taxi or walk to the UAE. The
nearest airports are there anyway.

Graham,

I was checking to see if metatuning was still a functioning entity, and I came across this thread!

I hope things are better than a week or so ago, but are you going to try to relocate to a less dangerous part of the world? I hope so - no job is worth your life (though if there are other reasons you are there, I hope you can be safe somehow).

Take care, Graham.

It's settled down, but it's not back to normal. I'm not
really sure what happens down the road. You can find
reports on the international news. I'm probably safer in
the village than I would be in a city in England because
this is generally a peaceful, friendly, low-crime place.
Some of the teachers, indeed, relocated here from more
dangerous countries.

Fingers crossed tomorrow's protests in Saudi Arabia go off
peacefully.
