There was at least one attempt to test making phone call from even a small plane that didn't work soon afterwards.
It does seem odd but for a 'conspiracy' to fake the calls seems way more trouble than it is worth. They would have to know who was going to take the flights in advance and fake their voices or somehow the planes were equipped with special transmitters. Otherwise the people on the ground are fake people. I for one have never heard the phone calls.

One would think so, but it helped create the whole "Let's Roll" mythology....

Just some time earlier (a year?) Colin Powell demonstrated voice
morphing technology on the TV. So they had the means to do such a
thing if they needed it.

I think the most important bit here is not how they did it, but that
the story of the cell phone calls being made 'for real' is a big fat
lie.

Interestingly, the Moussaoui case there was mention of the various
cell phone calls, and specifically, Flight 77 cell phone calls were
referenced, and as evidence, the cell phone bill transcript showed the
alleged call (from Barbara Olson to her husband) had a connection time
of zero seconds...odd that a related case, the trial of Zaccharias
Moussaoui---contradicted evidence that was used as '9/11 official
hijack myth' defense.

I don't remember hearing the calls either, but they are an oft touted
piece of 'evidence' that the planes were hijacked by Al-Queda
terrorists. One call, the one I mentioned, is supposedly of Barbara
Olson calling her husband and describing the approach to the Pentagon.
Another call has a man call his mom, and use his first and last
name....that would be like me calling my mom and saying "Hi Mom, this
is Aaron---Aaron Johnson".....it is a bit overdone, as if they wanted
to set up everything to make it oh-so-neat...."no last name to have to
figure out, that was easy!"
