One of my favorite discs is of Michaela Petri on recorder and Keith Jarrett on harpsichord doing the recorder sonatas, which you would never see on anyone's list of top drawer Bach, but maybe on mine. The performance is stellar, and the pieces are even more so. Drop everything and get this disc if you don't know it. And personally, I can't stand the whole idea of doing them on flute, which makes it a whole different bland color, IMO.

Anyway, I think looking at the Goldberg Variations, the Brandenburgs, the Art of Fugue, Musical Offering, the Matthew Passion (and the others), the motets,
and the B-minor mass alone gives lie to the 'Bach is greatest behind the organ' idea, personally. And I didn't even mention the WTC or suites....

Let's take the remainder of this OT thread to metatuning, shall we?

Thanks, Aaron! I did NOT know about those recorder pieces, so I'll be checking 'em out per your advice. I've played some recorder, and that sounds like some inspiration I could use to hit the 'shed!
